A Winter Break Surprise Brings DIY Mugs to the Senior Lounge

A fun mug customization activity in the senior lounge proves to be wonderful for stress relief and bonding within the senior class.

On the third day back from winter break, seniors were greeted with a special surprise in the senior lounge: a table full of blank mugs and a colorful pack of washer-safe markers.

Ms. Loke, who planned the surprise, said, “It all started with hot chocolate,” explaining that she had intended to surprise the class before break with the beloved beverage.

This time, though, Ms. Loke thought it was unfitting to distribute the hot chocolate in disposable cups, as they were usually served.

Ms. Loke said, “The senior class has high environmental awareness. Mugs made sense over paper cups.”

Therefore, Ms. Loke decided it would be best to give the seniors their own mugs, which they could personalize and keep as a memento from their time at Baldwin. However, supply chain issues prevented the materials from arriving until after break. The small schedule adjustment did not dampen the seniors’ enthusiasm to celebrate… and celebrate they did.

The mug customization activity was an absolute hit. The creative activity inspired collaboration, relieved stress, and reinforced a shared desire in maintaining a green thumb.

Katie McMahon ‘22 said, “When decorating our mugs, we were able to safely gather and bond with each other over our designs.”

Especially after not getting to see and interact with peers on a daily basis over winter break, this activity was refreshing and provided some long-awaited bonding time.

Students also enjoyed the activity because it functioned as a brain break.

Gabi Pritzker ‘22 said, “With school being overwhelming sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and do something fun.”

As classes continue, the mugs provide a good distraction and help take seniors’ minds off of the various stresses of the school day and their increase in workload.

The success of this activity also increased appreciation among the senior class for Ms. Loke and her continuous efforts in supporting the Class of 2022.
