Summer break provides a time for students to recharge, reset, and explore their interests. The Baldwin School’s talented and driven student body spent their summers in diverse ways, but many found local outlets to explore their passions.
Some students found a job, allowing them to make some money and get real-world experience. Nina Heverin-Alvarado ‘26 spent the summer connecting with her neighborhood as a lifeguard at the Pleasant Playground pool.
“I loved being able to work so close to my community, while also gaining new experience and enjoying time with friends,” Heverin-Alvarado said.
Laila Gopalani ‘26 spent her days with her family selling Indian food at the Chestnut Hill Farmer’s Market.
“It felt like the perfect way to spend my summer,” Gopalani said.
She said she was able to get hands-on experience and develop skills outside of the classroom.
Harper Lawson ‘27 spent her summer exploring her interests by taking part in a financial program at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was able to network and grow her leadership skills.
“We learned about financial literacy, data planning, and many more skills that I can use in real life, both now and as I get older,” Lawson said.
These programs truly can broaden your abilities while also providing you with knowledge that you’re able to use in real-life scenarios.
Claudia Kim ‘25 interned at two research labs this summer over two months. She was able to study theoretical chemistry at a Temple University lab through Baldwin’s summer science internship program. Then, she researched oral bacteria at The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dental Medicine.
“Being able to spend two months researching was such a great opportunity,” Kim said. “I’ve learned so much through my work in the lab and it makes me feel extra prepared for the year.”
Stella Mrockowski ‘27 spent her summer at a youth leadership program with Cradles to Crayons in Philadelphia. She said she was eventually able to help lead shifts for volunteer groups at the nonprofit.
“Service has always been an important part of my life,” Mrockowski said.
Through working, learning, researching, or volunteering, students will find that Philadelphia has a variety of options to stay busy over the summer.
