High school is a whirlwind of classes, sports, extracurriculars, and, let’s face it, endless to-do lists. With college applications and never-ending deadlines, it’s easy to forget one of the most important parts of high school: taking care of yourself. Self-care may sound simple, but in a world that celebrates productivity and constant business, it can feel nearly impossible. Here’s why it’s worth the effort and some ways to start your wellness journey.
It is important to set boundaries. One of the hardest lessons in high school is learning when to say “no.” With so many clubs and events, it’s easy to overcommit. But overloading yourself often leads to burnout, which makes everything harder. Instead, identify the activities that truly bring you joy or help you reach your goals and consider turning down others. A small change, like reducing screen time before bed, can also help you wind down and get better rest.
Another vital part of wellness is connecting with others. High school is challenging, but you’re not alone. Talking to friends or family can be great for uplifting your mood. It’s scientifically proven that smiling actually makes your mood better, according to verywellmind. So take a minute to laugh about something funny from class or lunch. But remember, teachers and counselors are here to support you if you have to talk about something very serious.
On a more personal note, we have a piece of advice for each grade of the Upper School. You are all at a different stage of your journey, and we hope that you are staying well during your stressful assessments, arguments, and applications.
For freshmen:
You are halfway through your first year of high school. Congratulations! Make the most of this year, and don’t take your free evenings for granted. This is your time to branch out and try something new.
Maybe talk to someone who you haven’t gotten to know before, or go to a new club meeting during a free G-block. We have countless opportunities here at Baldwin, and it is never too early to take a risk and see where it leads you. Most likely, you will end up better for it.
But even with all this exploration, still respect your fellow upperclassmen! That will make the entire Upper School a place of joy and wellness.
For sophomores:
Even though you are in the thick of chemistry labs, you are doing a great job. You might be struggling to find a rose during Roses and Thorns at sports practices, but as seniors, we can assure you that it will get better.
Sophomore year brings along an increase in workload and responsibilities, and it takes some time to get used to it. Use this year to find out what study and time management strategies work best for you. If you’re losing motivation to do homework or study, I recommend starting a FaceTime with your friends to unpack the material together.
Also, get excited for Ring Day! This is many upperclassmen’s favorite Baldwin tradition for a reason. It really is that fun. We can’t wait to see what blue theme you chose (Ocean? Sky?).
For juniors:
You’re in the thick of it, and it’s not easy. High expectations, heavy coursework, and the looming college application process. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos, but take a deep breath—you’re doing great, and you’ve already come so far. We promise it gets so much better!
It’s totally normal to feel stressed, but don’t let that stress take over every part of your life. Be mindful of your surroundings, and remember that not every conversation has to be about college or SAT scores. It’s good to talk about something else for a change! Lighten up a bit, laugh about something silly, and take those moments to just be a person, not a future applicant.
And remember: you don’t have to do it all on your own. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to someone for support. You’ve got a whole community of people who want to help you succeed. Keep pushing, but also remember to take care of yourself along the way. Senior year is closer than you think, and you’re going to make it.
Above all, please remember it all works out in the end!
For seniors:
We are so happy for everyone. All the applications are done, and some of us have already been accepted to schools! Let’s make the most of the last few months we have together. We want to remember this year as a time of fun and treasured memories, so let’s keep staying positive and supporting each other.
We are so proud of you for all the work you’ve done thus far, no matter where you end up next year. No, we shouldn’t completely lose motivation and get senioritis, but take a minute to pat yourself on the back, bake yourself some brownies, and watch your favorite TV show. If you’re feeling bored, try reading a new book or playing an instrument — do what makes you happy.
Our scary proximity to graduation has caused us all to be nostalgic. Don’t be afraid to tell your loved ones, friends, and teachers how much they mean to you. Spend time with your friends and family, and cherish every moment we have left.
……………
All in all, we want you to remember that even the most terrible grade, class, or day will be a faint memory in years’ time. Prioritize your well-being, even if it means getting an extra hour of sleep in exchange for a late grade on a homework assignment.
Love,
Avani and Riya
