Welcome back to the last first issue of About Town! I hope everyone had a great summer and perhaps even checked out some of my shore recommendations from last year’s issue.
This time, I’m focusing on the local gems of Wayne, one of the country’s first planned suburbs. Known for its food scene, Wayne boasts plenty of restaurants and cafes to satisfy any craving. Let’s break down some of my favorites.
Next to the historic Anthony Wayne Theater on Lancaster Avenue lies Gryphon Cafe. After working there for six months, I can attest to the quality of the coffee. If you’re looking for a quaint, cozy, family-owned cafe where espresso shots are made to perfection and the homemade syrups range from brown sugar to pumpkin to rose, Gryphon is the spot.
Nothing goes better with a cup of your favorite beverage than a good book. On Wayne Avenue, you will find Main Point Books, an independent bookstore filled with children’s fairytales, science and philosophy sections, and young adult fiction corners. Check out their “Staff Picks” section for some unique recommendations.
Switching gears, let’s head to the Lancaster County Farmers’ Market. Don’t let the nondescript brick exterior fool you: within the market, you’ll find every sort of delicacy you can imagine.
My favorite gem is the Country Twist. Order, and watch them hand roll cinnamon sugar bites or salty, soft pretzels. The market is only open on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, so plan accordingly.
Now, let’s escape the bustling downtown scene and enter the magical, hidden gardens of Chanticleer. Formerly the Rosengarten estate, the pristine 50 acres of Chanticleer offer a serene glimpse into nature at every turn.
Explore the magnificent flowers sprouting in the ruins of the tennis courts, meditate in the Asian Woods, picnic in the Bulb Meadow, or witness the stunning beauty of the lotuses in full bloom at the koi pond. No matter if you spend an hour or a day here, you will not be disappointed.
I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into my favorite spots in Wayne. Until next time, I hope to see you about town.
